Street Gangs - Terrorists in Training

Terrorism is an act of violence done by people whose goal is to inflict terror on the populace. The reason could be anything from political differences to something as sensitive as religious beliefs.

A famous group such as Al Qaeda is not the only source of terrorism in the world. In fact, in our very own communities may lurk a perfect example of terrorist who although work in a smaller scale, the impact of their actions are still far reaching. I am talking about the gangs in our very own neighborhoods, the ‘tambays’, the gangsters, hoodlums, whatever you may call them they are all the same. They are terrorists.

Gang violence is a local form of terrorism that is common in many places in the Philippines and in the USA, particularly Los Angeles, California. The reason why I cited these two places is because that many Filipinos who migrated in the US is part of a gang. Examples of famous Filipino gangs in Los Angeles includes but are not limited to, Arkho Pinoy (AKP), Jefrox (JFX), Satanas (STS), Pinoy Boys Gang (PBG), Tau Gamma Pinoy (TGP), Pinoy Real (PR) among many others.

The problems that they pose are many and all damaging to the community and its people in general not just fellow gangsters. They cause the people to be afraid when they walk alone in the night because they may be victims of gang violence (being mugged, mistaken for rival gang members), establishments are being broken into, crossfire, etc.

Another major issue is that gangs are the leading distributors of drugs in the streets. This is another problem! Not only do they take our kids but they also ruin the lives of many others by getting them hooked on illegal drugs like crack and heroine! This cannot be pardoned!

Young people are the hope of the nation. We cannot allow gangs to ruin their futures, their careers! Drugs are also the source of their money. With it, they buy guns that are readily available to them! With this in hand, violence increased exponentially, ruining many businesses and killing many lives!

All hope is not lost. City Attorney Rocky Delgadillo proposed that the whole community be involved. People should report any witnessed gang activity to prevent its spread. However, this is not enough. People are scared! That’s the problem. No one wants to be involved. Another solution is that parents be prosecuted if their children join gangs, but I honestly believe that this is stupid! Parents have no control over what their children do or what they are exposed to outside their homes. Their families will only be stricken if the parents are prosecuted.

That’s why I propose something more hands on. Something more extreme. Gangs respect violence so we will give them violence. Declare WAR on them! Have the police given the task of wiping them out. Send strike teams to gang hideouts or hangouts. Kill all that stand in the way. This is brutal, maybe bordering on breaking human rights, but in turn, kids will be discouraged to join the gangs. The motto is simple, “Join a gang, get shot in the face.” How do you like them apples?

Stop the fear! We are afraid. That is their goal! If nothing is done, then they will spread like a cancer and choke the life out of our community! Kill them all! Leave none alive! If blood must be paid for peace then we must pay it.

the title was pretty catchy so I read it.

To your problem, not all of the gangs are terrorist in training. Maybe you can say "others"

And to your proposal, this is good, but harsh. You're saying that killing is the way? Why not making it like punishments or something. Killing them makes us look like that we're the terrorist, and they're the victim.

i agree with what you said about street gangs.
Indeed they bring fear into the lives of a lot of people. what other solution do you have in mind? a little lighter than the said solution? :) can be violent if you really want, but not to the point that you already are killing people. :)

I sort of agree with everybody here. We can not generalize the principles and actions of all gangs. On the other hand, there are some gangs that seem like terrorist organizations with simply no money.

Street gangs are terrorists in definition. But dont be too harsh and violent to the point you want to eliminate them. The blog was violent but like aldrin said, the title was cathcy and maked me read also...
You seem to be an anti-gangsters but sure know some of the gangs.....

The title caught my eye. You're sure caught up with this issue, aren't you? I can almost imagine it with every exclamation point blotted all over the last paragraph. But I don't think just killing them off one by one is the reason.

I agree to what others said. Not all gangs can be considered as terrorists in training. Haven't you heard of some of the helpful projects that these 'terrorists in training'that you call conducts in your community?

Your proposed solution is harsh. Killing is obviously not the best way.

Gangs do nothing to the community except harm it. Fraternities are the ones helping the community. A GANG is different from a FRATERNITY. It would be a personal insult to me to compare a fraternity to a gang!

Perception is the reason why people think and act the way they do. If we take a peak at history, gangs came from fraternities which were pertained to as brotherhoods. And brotherhoods are groups that share the same thoughts that do things on their way in accordance to what we can consider as humane. As time passed by, I guess the younger generation perceived these brotherhoods as a symbol for being "cool" and there came to a point that these younger generations defined brotherhoods into gangs which are more physically aggressive than the brotherhoods.

Like others say, your title is really catchy, and i believe that
your solution is might be a great idea, even though it's brutal to also give the terrorist (or gang) a violence then so be it.

Come to think of it, your right, that if the younger ones becomes discouraged of joining gangs, then we will be able to lessen the terrorism.

Apparently, not all gangs are "Terrorists in Training". Yes, they bring terror, but they only terrorize people in a small scale. And yes, they sell drugs to people which ruin lives, but once deals commence, they would be hard to stop. The drug circulation around numerous areas would be far too immense to be able to put a stop to it.

Gangs respect violence so we will give them violence. Declare WAR on them!

Your solution is quite harsh. We are trying to save people, not kill them. Sure, declare war on them, but you're just trying to make things even worse than they already are. When you attack, they will surely retaliate. And, inevitably, you will continue pressing the attack. It will only lead to more lost lives.

1st of all, you should not argue with the ones giving u comments. lol!

"The motto is simple, “Join a gang, get shot in the face.” How do you like them apples?

Stop the fear! We are afraid. That is their goal! If nothing is done, then they will spread like a cancer and choke the life out of our community! Kill them all! Leave none alive! If blood must be paid for peace then we must pay it."-you are talking about having peace, yet your solutions are all brutal. that's total irony.

it's like just joining a fraternity. not all fraternities help community, in fact, de la salle canlubang would not ban fraternities here if it helps? yes, it can be beneficial in a way, but what if a member died in the initiation? what would the fraternity do with it?

aside from that, i heard different fraternities having war with each other an causing IMMENSE fear with the people around it. so i suggest, if you are citing gangs as pests in our society, might as well include the fraternities too.

gangs and fraternities have a lot of differences, but a lot of similarities in terms of violence too.

Miguel Monasterial said...

PS. you can consider fraternities as terrorists too. in a way, depends on the fraternity.

note: if i would be beaten or killed with this comment, then fraternities truly are terrorists :)

This seems like a one-sided approach to the problem. To be more objective, particularly in your solution, be wise and look at other alternatives (peaceful, that is). This text might not get the needed 'support' in so desires if the perspective remains the same.

I want to be careful in pointing this out, but I don't think what you gave is really the right solution to the problem. Two wrongs do not make a right. If we stop violence with violence won't that induce more violence? And if we want peace, there is always a strategically diplomatic solution to it. We simply had not found it yet. All we can do is to be vigilant and to crusade for peace the best way we can.
