A common face of the new millennium is Osama Bin Laden’s. His face has been associated with a rising global crisis, terrorism. Terrorism is basically creating fear to establish an ideological goal through the deliberate targeting of innocent people.
Maulana Fazllulah is a pro-taliban cleric who uses his influence to convince people that the only way for them to achieve their goals is to use terrorism. He is supposedly behind the numerous bombings in the Pakistani region. In India, a separatist group results to terrorism when their cry to detach their part of the region is denied by the government. Some incidents of kidnapping and hostage taking are also being linked to terrorism.
Terrorism is now a worldwide problem. More and more groups result to this form of “negotiations” because most of the time they work. They achieve their goal of global panic. They give people reasons to be constantly in fear, even in times when they should not. Just one attack can be enough to trigger months and months of panic among citizens. Governments are forced to spend millions to try and answer the problem. Prices of some commodities go up, making the effects go beyond physical and psychological damages.
Ultimately, the person that gets affected the most is the ordinary citizen. They are the targets of the bombs and they are also affected the most by the aftershocks of such attacks.
Many solutions have been proposed to battle this crisis, but none of them prove to be promising. One step most countries have taken is to leave no room for diplomacy. Negotiations with terrorist organizations are unacceptable.
The United States of America’s answer is the simplest one, elimination of the threat. American troops have been deployed all over the world to seek out or assist in the eradication of all known terrorist outfits. This action has resulted in a huge increase in military expenditures. The U.S. is reported to have spent over a trillion dollars on this already. This method costs a lot of money and sparks a lot of controversy that is why most governments choose to focus on terrorism prevention instead. Seeking out terrorism' roots has proven to be a really hard task. Hundreds of thousands of lives have been lost to this war and the future still looks grim.
I can not think of a solution that can solve the terrorist problem directly. Maybe if proper education is made available for everyone, people would not have to result to terrorism. Yes education is expensive, but what if right. As students, we should be more aware of serious matters like terrorism, global warming, the government... Awareness is the first step for action. As future businessmen and women, we should keep in mind to be socially responsible and help in our community.
